Steps to Make Your New Year Party Hat
1. Build Your
Armature
Draw a circle onto your cardboard and cut the
circle out. Find the center on your cardboard circle to draw one pie shape. Cut
the one pie shape out of the cardboard circle. Notes: The larger circle you draw,
the taller your cone will be.
When you cut the pie here is something to remember:
If you cut out a small pie cutout, you get a wide cone and vice versa, you
produce a narrow funnel cutting a wide wedge.
2. Paper Mache the Party hat
1st
Session
Cover
the hat armature with 3 to 4 layers of newspaper soaked in paper mache paste.
Lay your paper flat onto your hat armature and work out all air bubbles. Keep Appling
paper with paste soaked hands until the inside and out is covered.
If
the cardboard is thick you may cover with 2 to 3 layers of paper and mache paste,
you decide.
The
size of your Party Hat will determine how long it will take to dry. But roughly
it will take 24 hours.

If you need once the Party Hat has dried you can lightly
sand with sandpaper and wipe off before painting.
Poke Holes
Remember
to poke a hole on each side of your hat to add a ribbon.
3. Paint New Year's Party Hat
Paint a white coat of primer paint
on your party hat to give a white canvas for painting and keep the newspaper
print from bleeding through.
Once
the base coat as dried we paint with a layer of acrylic paints and after the
varnish we added special glitter to our hats.
Let all you painting completely
dry before sealing with varnish.
4. Varnish and Protect
You must seal your paper mache
pieces with varnish for protection.
Follow the instructions on your
varnish to apply. We use Polycrylic Minwax at the studio to seal all our paper
mache art.
Minwax Varnish comes in a can in
gloss or stain to apply with a brush, apply 3 to 4 coats and let it dry.
5. Hanger and Ribbon
Add a ribbon and place on top of
your beautiful head.
