Steps to Make Your Octopus Pearl
1 Build Your
Armature
The Base
Draw a circle onto cardboard work out from your
circle creating eight octopus legs. Cut this out.
Wade up newspaper into a ball, using masking tape
to shape your newspaper into a Pearl body. Glue the newspaper body onto the
center of the cardboard base. Now build up the tentacles with newspaper.
Tentacles
Pearl says she has one shorter tentacle than the rest,
though this is barely noticeable. Crumble up newspaper, glue into place on the
base and against the body.
Ears
Fold up newspaper into a rectangle and tape the
newspaper ears to the head on either side of the eyes.
At this stage add any features to Pearl that you
like, whatever makes you happy you put that in your world.
Now Pearl is ready for Paper Mache.
2 Paper
Mache
1st Session
Cover Pearl
with 3 to 4 layers of newspaper with hands soaked in paper mache paste. Lay the
paper flat onto your armature working out all air bubbles with your hands. As
you continue to apply layers of paper Pearl
will begin to take shape.
Now that she is covered with paper mache let Pearl
completely dry.

Tip: Check
Pearl's body for weak spots by
pushing on her body with your fingers. If she is sturdy enough for your taste
then skip to Step 3 Painting Pearl.
Paper Clay
or Paper Mache?
2nd Session
For the 2nd session you have two choices; paper clay or
paper mache. Both mediums are wonderful and will render a perfect Pearl sculpture. The 2 best benefits
to using the paper clay vs. paper mache are time and toughness.
Both recipes are on the channel; please do check them out.
Paper
Mache: Cover the Pearl armature with 3 to 4 layers of newspaper
using your hands soaked in paper mache paste and again let her completely dry.
Pearl loves to dry in the sun and said she can walk on land.
Pearl will take at least 24 hours to dry depending on the size you create.
Paper
Clay: Cover the Pearl
with 1/4 to 1/2 inch layer of paper clay, and letting your paper clay completely dry.
Apply the #paperclay with your hands and smooth with paper
mache paste, butter knife, etc.

Drying: The size of your Pearl will determine how
long it will take to dry. A large Pearl will take 3 to 4 days to dry. You can
use a fan, the sun, and the oven on the lowest temperature it will allow.
Tip: Our oven can go as low as 145 degrees
Celsius, which is a perfect temperature for slowly drying your paper clay. If
you heat your clay to fast it can turn dark brown but this will be cover with
paint. Also please don't leave your clay unattended while drying in the oven,
use your best judgment, it's your call.
Question: Can I put paper clay directly onto my armature and skip the
paper mache step one?
Answer: Yes, if your armature can support the weight of the paper clay
without the support of several of layers of paper mache.
3.
Paint Your Pearl
For a smoother you can lightly sand her
with sandpaper and wipe her off before painting.
Paint a white coat of primer paint on Pearl
to give a white canvas. We use flat white interior house paint to prime our
paper clay sculptures.
Once the base coat as dried paint with
acrylics anyway you like. Pearl is pink with a happy face positioned in the
middle of her face. Let all the painting completely dry before sealing with
varnish.
4.
Varnish and Protect
You must seal your paper mache or paper
clay pieces with varnish for protection. Apply 3 to 4 coats of varnish and let
that dry.
Follow the instructions on your varnish to
apply. We use Polycrylic Minwax at the studio to seal all our art.
