Steps to Make Your Dory
1 Build Your
Armature
The Base
Draw Dory onto a piece of cardboard. You can print
out Dory's side profile to use as your drawing template. Cut out your dory to use as the base of your
armature.
Now we will build up Dory's body by crumpling up
newspapers and gluing this down onto her body. Use masking tape to keep the
shape constant with a blue tang fish.
Place your armature into a plastic bag.
Eyes
Roll newspaper into a ball, hold with masking tape,
and glue onto each side of Dory's head in the right spot, of course.
Fins
Cut two fins out of cardboard and position in place
onto each side of Dory. We have attached wire to our fins to place and position
but you can tape or glue just the same.
At this stage add any features to Dory that you
like, whatever makes you happy you put that in your world. Now Dory is ready
for Paper Mache.
2 Paper Mache
1st Session
Cover Dory
with 3 to 4 layers of newspaper with hands soaked in paper mache paste. Lay the
paper flat onto your armature working out all air bubbles with your hands. As
you continue to apply layers of newspaper Dory will begin to hold shape.
Now that she is covered with paper mache let Dory completely
dry, this will take about 24 hours. You can place in front of a fan or in a
window to aid the drying process.

Tip: Check
Dory's body for weak spots by
pushing on her body with your fingers. If she is sturdy enough for your taste
then skip to Step 3 Painting Dory.
Paper Clay or Paper Mache?
2nd Session
For the 2nd session you have two choices; paper clay or
paper mache. Both mediums are wonderful and will render a perfect Dory sculpture. The 2 best benefits to
using the paper clay vs. paper mache are time and toughness.
Both recipes are on the channel; please do check them out.
To finish with Paper Mache: Cover the Dory
armature with 3 to 4 layers of newspaper using your hands soaked in paper mache
paste and again let her completely dry.
Dory loves to dry in the sun and said she can walk on land. Dory
will take at least 24 hours to dry depending on the size you create.
To finish with Paper Clay: Cover the Dory with 1/4 to 1/2 inch layer of
paper clay using your hands and smooth with paper mache paste, butter knife, hands,
etc. Here is our favorite Paper Clay Recipe: http://goo.gl/xoTFbJ
Drying Paper Clay: The size of your Dory will determine how
long it will take to dry. A large Dory will take 3 to 4 days to dry. You can
use a fan, the sun, and the oven on the lowest temperature it will allow.
Tip: Our oven can go as low as 145 degrees Celsius, which is a perfect temperature for slowly drying your paper clay. If you heat your clay to fast it can turn dark brown but this will be cover with paint. Also please don't leave your clay unattended while drying in the oven, use your best judgment, it's your call.
Question: Can I put paper clay directly
onto my armature and skip the paper mache step one?
Answer: Yes, if your armature can support
the weight of the paper clay without the support of several of layers of paper
mache.
3.
Paint Your Dory
For a smoother sculpture you can lightly
sand Dory with sandpaper and wipe her off before painting.
Paint a white coat of primer paint on Dory
to give a white canvas. We use flat white interior house paint to prime our
paper clay sculptures.
Once the primer coat as dried paint with
acrylic paints anyway you like. Dory is a blue tang with lots of personality.
Let
all the painting completely dry before sealing with varnish.
4.
Varnish and Protect
You must seal your paper mache or paper
clay pieces with varnish for protection. Apply 3 to 4 coats of varnish and let
that dry.
Follow the instructions on your varnish to
apply. We use Polycrylic Minwax at the studio to varnish and protect all our
art.
Dory Wrap Up
This is just one way to make a blue
tang Dory art sculpture; we would love to hear your thoughts and see your paper
mache creations.
Great to have you at the studio
please subscribe before you leave. Remember just keep creating.
