Paper Mache Birds Nest
How to create a lovely paper mache bird's nest to display a natural nest found in the woods.
This bird's nest is a shabby chic way to cozy up any room in your home.
Specialty paper and Elmer's Glue
1 Creating a Bird Nest Armature
Blow up a balloon any size you like.
2 Paper Mache Strips and Paste
During your first stripping session cover the armatures all over with 2 to 3 layers of paper mache strips dipped in your easy paper mache paste. Once covered set the armature aside to completely dry.
Your nest armature must be completely dried before adding more wet paper mache strips.
More Paper Mache
Paper Mache: Cover with 8 to 9 more layers of paper mache strips and let it completely dry before moving on. If your Bird Nest are not strong enough add more strips and let those completely dry.

3. Paint or Decoupage Your Bird Nest
I choose to finish my nest with paper torn into small pieces then decoupage onto the nest, working out all air bubbles. Covering the entire nest with 2 layers then letting it completely dry.
Seal your paper mache with varnish for protection. I applied 3 coats of Polycrylic Minwax Clear Gloss to protect the nest.
Varnish comes in a spray can in gloss or stain, spray on 3 to 4 coats and let it dry.
