Start by reading your pattern instructions, there are great visuals for helping you sew to the side of each step.
The back of the pattern envelope is very important; you will find sizes, fabric, and other requirements to creating your garment. Having every on the back helps you quickly purchase everything without opening the pattern instructions at the fabric store.
Before you ever sit down to sew gather all the things you need, this will save you much frustration while sewing.
